PHOENIX — The house built by Frank Lloyd Wright for his son in an upscale Phoenix area has been tagged with a very upscale selling price — $12.9 million.

Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty listed the Arcadia-neighborhood house in early September.

The renowned architect, who died in 1959, designed the spiral home for his second-youngest son and daughter-in-law. The David and Gladys Wright House was finished in 1952.

For close to $13 million, the buyer will get three bedrooms, four baths and a rooftop deck that faces Camelback Mountain, among other features of the 2,553-square-foot concrete home.

The 5.9-acre property, which includes a guest house, near 54th Street and Camelback Road has changed hands a couple of times in recent years.

Attorney Zach Rawling bought the place in 2012 for $2.3 million, reportedly intending to turn it into a museum and cultural center. Neighbors objected because it would have required zoning changes and potentially allowed much more traffic.

Rawling, who grew up in Phoenix, then said he would donate the home to Frank Lloyd Wright’s School of Architecture at Taliesin, but that plan also fell through.

Before Rawling, a developers had bought the house and were arranging for its demolition to replace it with new homes, the New York Times reported.

Preservationists fought to save the house at 5212 E. Exeter Blvd.

Rawling told real estate blog Curbed he hoped the next owner preserved the house.

“After two years of being on the property, I appreciate living in the desert more than I ever have growing up. The care with which he sited the house to relate to the surrounding environment is incredible,” he said.
