PHOENIX — Arizona politicians and first responders went on social media Tuesday to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives when terrorists hijacked four airplanes in a coordinated attack on America 17 years ago.

The airplanes crashed into New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 11, 2001.

In all, 2,996 were killed. Memorials to 9/11 continue to grow.

Ducey said flags on state office buildings would fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset.

In a partial statement, Arizona Republican Party Chairman Jonathan Lines said:

“On this day, we are able to mourn the innocent lives lost on September 11th and pay tribute to our heroes who fight against terrorism and violence every day. God bless all of our men and women in uniform and those who were impacted by extreme loss on this day.
