Surprise City Hall to host 9/11 memorial through September

PHOENIX — The city of Surprise will host a 9/11 memorial in its City Hall throughout September.

The 360-degree memorial features actual twisted steel from the World Trade Center, as well as names of all public safety personnel killed in the attacks etched in glass.

The memorial is usually displayed in the Surprise Public Safety Building but is being moved to City Hall in honor of the attacks’ 17th anniversary.

Julie Moore, battalion chief of the Surprise Fire-Medical Department, said former Surprise Mayor Joan Shafer obtained the piece of steel after the attacks and the city kept it on a display stand.

Then a group of public safety workers decided on a better way to showcase it, and one of the city’s own firefighters welded the new memorial’s stand.

The approximately 7-foot memorial was originally unveiled in 2011. Because it has wheels and is portable, it has been moved to different buildings several times and has even been brought outdoors for ceremonies.

City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 5 p.m., excluding Labor Day.

“It’s a beautiful, must-see piece of art,” Moore said. “For us in public safety, it’s a reminder of our brothers and sisters that gave the ultimate sacrifice.”
