Weekly wrap-up: Here are some of the biggest stories of Oct. 29 week

PHOENIX — It’s Sunday, otherwise known as the day when one week starts to wind down in preparation for a new one.

Between the New York City attack on Halloween and the temporary deactivation of President Donald Trump’s Twitter account, this past week has been buzzing with news.

Here is a recap of some of the major events that happened over the past week, both in Arizona and across the nation.


Oakland Athletics catcher arrested in Arizona on gun charge

Oakland Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell was arrested in Arizona after a food delivery person alleged he pointed a gun at her, the Scottsdale Police Department announced on Oct. 29.

Scottsdale police said officers went to Maxwell’s home the night before after getting a call about a person with a gun. Maxwell was booked on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct.

Trump ex-campaign chair Manafort pleads not guilty in Russia probe

President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and a former Manafort business associate, Rick Gates, were indicted on Monday.

Both Manafort and Gates were indicted on felony charges of conspiracy against the United States, acting as an unregistered foreign agent, and several other financial counts involving tens of millions of dollars routed through offshore accounts.

Both men pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Netflix to end ‘House of Cards’ amid Kevin Spacey sexual assault claims

The streaming service Netflix announced Monday it is ending the hit show “House of Cards,” one day after allegations surfaced that the show’s star, Kevin Spacey, sexually assaulted an underage boy in 1986.

Netflix and the producer of “House of Cards” said they are “deeply troubled” by the allegation of sexual abuse leveled against Spacey.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the streaming service and series’ producer Media Rights Capital said it was indefinitely suspending production of the show “to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew.”

Terror charges filed in New York City truck attack

Prosecutors filed terrorism charges on Wednesday against a man suspected of driving a truck down a New York City bike path and killing eight people.

The charges against 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov could bring the death penalty.

Saipov allegedly told investigators he decided to carry out the attack in response to the Islamic State terror group’s online calls to action.

Number of Arizona Halloween weekend DUI arrests doubled this year

The number of people arrested on suspicion of DUI in Arizona doubled this Halloween weekend when compared to last year, data showed on Thursday.

Numbers from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety showed 447 people were arrested by a statewide task force this year, more than double that of the 216 arrested last year.

Twitter worker deactivates Trump’s account, company restores in minutes

President Donald Trump laughed off a shutdown of his Twitter account on Thursday, initially described by the company as “human error” but later revealed to have been done on purpose.

The 11-minute blackout was attributed to a customer support employee who was working his or her final shift.

The company has not identified the former employee.

Central Avenue closes as downtown Phoenix readies outdoor ice rink

For the next two months, a short strip of Central Avenue will be closed in downtown Phoenix to make room for an annual outdoor ice skating rink.

Central Avenue was closed by Friday between Washington and Jefferson streets for construction of the CitySkate Holiday Ice Rink, which was scheduled to open Nov. 25 and remain in place until Jan 2.

The road runs through the middle of the CityScape development.

New York City terror suspect received speeding ticket in Arizona

The man accused of driving down a New York City bike path and killing eight people received a speeding ticket in Arizona, the head of the state Department of Public Safety said Friday.

“One of my troopers – one of my commercial interdiction officers – actually had stopped this subject back in 2014,” Col. Frank Milstead said, adding that he was stopped on Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff.

Sayfullo Saipov, who would have then been 25 or 26, was stopped for speeding and cited.

DPS to conduct zero-tolerance speed crackdown in Phoenix

The Arizona Department of Public Safety will ticket all drivers who are caught speeding during a 30-day operation that will begin next week.

“I would just tell everybody that if you’re going to drive like that on the (Loop) 101, you’re going to encounter a state trooper,” Milstead said on Friday. “We will be out in our unmarked cars. It’s Operation No Need for Speed.”

Milstead said the crackdown will focus on Loops 101, 202 and 303 with one goal: Get people to slow down.

Opening of Arizona Snowbowl pushed back due to warm weather

Avid snowboarders and skiiers in Arizona are going to have to wait a little longer to hit the snow.

Arizona Snowbowl, a ski resort in northern Arizona near Flagstaff, announced Friday that unseasonably warm weather has forced the opening date to be pushed back until Nov. 17.

The popular tourist attraction was scheduled to be open by Nov. 10, but officials said weather has not been cold enough to create snow.
