Developers have broken ground on Arizona’s first veteran family housing project in Tempe.

When completed, Valor on Eighth will be located near Rural road and 8th Street, and will offer market-rate apartments, including many for low-income veteran women and families.

“This project is going to have 50 units of one, two and three bedroom units,” said Laura Skotnicki, the Chief Operating Officer of a group called Save the Family. “Our hope is that it will be completely built and leased up by December 2017.”

Skotnicki says there’s only a few places like this in the country.

“There are similar projects for single chronically homeless vet males, but this one of four in the country that specifically targets veteran families and women,” she added.

Several services will be offered.

“Anything from parenting classes to career readiness and job training,” said Skotnicki.  “We’ll have an after school program for kids that live on site.”

Skotnicki added that the complex will be near the light rail and Arizona State University.

“For low income families, transportation is usually an issue. We’re very excited that it’s right next to ASU with lots of amenities, and definitely, transportation.”
