Hundreds of Phoenix high schoolers now have a shot at financial aid thanks to a FAFSA Fiesta at their school.

The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a free form that qualifies students for federal loans, grants and scholarships. Seniors at Central High School filled out the form yesterday at the school library. In return for doing that – and applying to at least one college – they got free food and music.

“Growing up now, not everybody can afford college,” said senior Terry Gardner. “If they can get the FAFSA, it can definitely help them.”

Student government leader Nick Kazanas has helped put on the FAFSA Fiesta since 2013. Last year he said they got more than 400 students to apply.

“It’s especially important for our students,” he said. “For a lot of our families, college might not be at the forefront of their mind; it might not be their biggest priority. If the students can get some help financially, it’s a lot easier for those families.”

The application period opened Oct. 1 for the 2017-2018 school year. For more information on deadlines (or to fill out the FAFSA online), click here.
