LISTEN: Former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer - Mac and Gaydos Election Insider

PHOENIX — The Arizona delegates who are quitting instead of casting a vote for Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention are giving their votes to Hillary Clinton, former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said Tuesday.

“We are Republicans. They are just throwing their vote away to Hillary,” she told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Mac & Gaydos on Tuesday.

Brewer said the matter of being a delegate is simple: You play by the rules.

“I’ve been a grassroots Republican all my life, I’ve been to the last five conventions, I’ve watched politics forever and I play by the rules,” she said. “And the rules are the winner takes the delegates.”

Brewer said the nine delegates who have quit may have a case of sour grapes because their candidate didn’t come out the presumptive nominee.

“I guess they like fights better than calmness and coming together under the Republican flag,” she said. “It’s unfortunate.”

The former governor also warned the delegates they will have a choice to make come November if Trump is handed the nomination at the convention.

“Who are they going to vote for? If you’re a Republican, and you’re that entrenched into the Republican Party, you’re not going to vote for Hillary,” she said. “And if you’re that involved in the party, you’re not going to leave that (ballot) empty.”

The two most recent delegates to drop out, Frank Riggs and Zudi Jasser, both said they have serious concerns about Trump.

Riggs said he “realized that I couldn’t go to Cleveland in good conscience and vote” for the business mogul, while Jasser called Trump a “daily embarrassment to conservatism” in his resignation letter.

Brewer said that, despite some of the delegates bashing Trump, there’s still a long road to the general election.

“They might come around,” she said.
