PHOENIX — It’s only been a couple of days since Mark Kelly announced he would run for U.S. Senate in Arizona next year, but he has already raised more than $1 million.

Jacob Peters, the campaign’s communications director, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday that the campaign has raised $1.1 million since Tuesday.

Peters said the campaign was closing in on 15,000 individual donations and will not take donations from corporate political action committees.

Kelly launched his Senate campaign with a video that highlighted his and his wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’, service for Arizona.

“What I learned from my wife is how you use policy to improve people’s lives,” Kelly said in the video.

“I care about people, I care about the state of Arizona, I care about this nation. So because of that, I’ve decided I’m launching a campaign for the United States Senate.”

The former astronaut and Navy pilot is the first candidate to declare a run for the Democratic primary. Republican Sen. Martha McSally is expected to seek re-election but has not yet made a formal announcement.
