Estrella Road interchange on South Mountain Freeway completed

PHOENIX — After a six-month construction project needed for a 100-foot bridge consisting of 160,000 cubic yards of earthwork, Estrella Road was re-opened on Thursday west of 51st Avenue in Laveen.
It’s one part of the 13-interchange, 22-mile enterprise that will be the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
The corridor used golden wall designs around the freeway as a nod to the area’s history.
“The aesthetic treatments include this riverbank pattern that kind of honors the area’s agricultural heritage,” ADOT spokesperson Dustin Krugel told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
Additionally, there are two roundabouts on Estrella, which ADOT said can serve as a more efficient option than the typical diamond exchange.
The road reopened, but the process was not quite concluded. Minor work including paving the ramps and adding signs, lighting and signals is still under construction.
Dobbins Road west of 59th and 75 avenues in Laveen will remain closed through April 2019.
Nevertheless, the Valley is getting closer to completing the Loop 202.
“It’s really starting to take shape and it’s really starting to look like a freeway right now,” Krugel said.
