Flight attendants fall ill, American Airlines plane returns to Phoenix

PHOENIX — A Phoenix flight scheduled to land across the country had to return to Sky Harbor Airport on Friday morning after two flight attendants complained of nausea, dizziness and the smell of burning rubber.

Capt. Larry Subervi of the Phoenix Fire Department said in an email that paramedics tended to the two American Airlines flight staffers. The Baltimore-bound airplane was evacuated once it safely reached the gate. No one else aboard complained of the symptoms.

The plane had not been in the air long before it turned around.

A hazardous-material unit waited on the tarmac.

The flight attendants said they noticed the smell shortly after takeoff and that it hadn’t lasted long.

By the time paramedics evaluated the pair, they were no longer feeling ill.

Subervi said neither wanted to go to the hospital.
