Arizona college student goes viral for rigging ‘Seinfeld’ theme door alarm

PHOENIX — A student at Northern Arizona University went viral this week after he installed a door alarm in his dorm that plays the theme from “Seinfeld” when people walk in.

Evan Genuise, 18, told BuzzFeed he wanted to make the device after he saw a tutorial online.

“As soon as I saw the video I wanted to make one,” he told the website.

Genuise, a freshman who is majoring in electrical engineering and computer science, said it took about a month of trial and error to get the sensor working correctly. When it did, he tweeted a video of it that went viral.

He said he planned to keep the device installed forever because he thinks it’s so funny.

The device works like this: When a door or other object breaks an invisible plane in front of the sensor, it triggers an audio board to play a certain sound.

In this case, it’s a bass line from the popular TV show.

Genuise said he was inspired to learn about electronics by his late friend Stephen Foster, who was killed in a car accident two years ago.

Genuise said the pair met in marching band, when Foster was trying to create a portable Nintendo 64.

“[Foster] would have loved the ‘Seinfeld’ sensor,” Genuise told the site.
