7 injured in wrong-way accident on Interstate 10 in Phoenix

PHOENIX — At least seven people were injured in a wrong-way collision on a Phoenix freeway early Friday.

Authorities said three adults and four children suffered injuries in the wreck on westbound Interstate 10 near 19th Avenue. All were expected to recover.

The accident tied up traffic for nearly two hours, backing up drivers for over a mile.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a woman with two children was driving a sedan heading east in the westbound lanes. She hit a rental truck that was towing a car. The driver, a man, was traveling with a woman and two children.

Spokesman Raul Garcia said cause of the wreck was under investigation but that there was no immediate evidence of impairment.

Cleanup and investigation after the 3:40 a.m. wreck near 19th Avenue kept a lane closed during the start of the morning commute.
