Powerful Verizon ad shows why girls may shy away from math, science

A new Verizon commercial addresses a statistic by the National Science Foundation.
According to the foundation, 66 percent of 4th-grade girls say they like science and math, but only 18 percent of all college engineering majors are female.
The video shows a little girl as she grows up from a toddler to a teen. Depicting the way social occurrences push girls away from math and science during their childhood, the girl’s parents use typical, seemingly innocuous phrases that end up impacting her life choices.
The video ends with a lingering, sobering question.
