PHOENIX — In a recent Gallup poll, Phoenix ranked higher in the percentage of LGBT residents than other major cities, including New York City and Chicago.

Over 300,000 residents in the top 50 U.S. metropolitan areas were asked whether they identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, otherwise known as LGBT. About 4 percent of Phoenix-area residents said they identify as such, the Phoenix Business Journal reported.

While Phoenix was tied 20th with the Tampa, Florida metropolitan area, the city ranked higher than the national average, which fell at 3.6 percent.

The San Francisco-area came in at number one, with 6.2 percent of its locals associating as LGBT. In second was the Portland, Oregon-area, with 5.4 percent of LGBT residents.

Approximately 4 percent of NYC-area residents and 3.8 percent of Chicago-area citizens identify as LGBT.

In last place was Birmington, Alabama, with just 2.6 percent of gay residents. Earlier this month, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled probate judges must comply with an existing state ban on gay marriage, although the ban had been ruled unconstitutional by a Federal District Court judge.
