PHOENIX — Border Patrol agents working in the Tucson Sector found a border tunnel earlier this month, the agency said in a press release.
Agents discovered the tunnel Aug. 7 after noticing an area of freshly-disturbed rock and dirt near the DeConcini Port of Entry. The partially-finished tunnel extended 100 feet into the United States and had electrical wiring and ventilation pipes.
The tunnel was filled with water at the time of discovery.
About a week later, agents arrested one person attempting to smuggle about 235 pounds worth of marijuana through the 2.5-by-3-foot tunnel. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $117,000.
Agents are monitoring the tunnel.
