Evacuation orders due to threat of flooding issued and then lifted in Gila County

PHOENIX – Evacuation orders were issued and then lifted in Gila County on Sunday night, but residents threatened by potential flash flooding were told to be on alert after another weekend of heavy rains in the Globe-Miami area.

At 8 p.m. Sunday, GO evacuation orders were issued for the Little Acres Mobile Home Park and Miami Gardens neighborhood. But those areas were returned to the SET status of the state’s emergency alert system at 10:15 p.m., according to the Gila County Public Health and Community Services Department.

As more storms developed Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Globe, Miami and Claypool. The warning was set to expire at 4:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, Queen Valley in Pinal County was also in the SET status, which means an area is considered to be in “significant danger.” Residents are asked to:

• Consider voluntarily relocating to a shelter or with family/friends outside the affected area.
• Avoid close contact with those who are sick and should practice public health recommendations when relocating.
• Grab your emergency go kit.
• Keep in mind unique needs for your family or special equipment for pets and livestock.

Furthermore, stretches of US 60 in both directions between Superior and Miami remained closed Monday morning due to flooding.

State Route 238 between Gila Bend and Maricopa reopened around 2:15 p.m., but two other stretches of roadways remained closed as of 6 p.m.

US 60 westbound remains CLOSED between mileposts 241-244, and US 60 eastbound remains CLOSED between mileposts 239-244.
There is no estimated time to reopen the highway.

When the latest round of storms hit, the area was still recovering from the impact of heavy rainfall two weeks earlier.

The City of Globe again facing floods today.

About 2.5 inches of rain fell in Globe over a 24-hour period on Sept. 26-27, creating flash floods that killed three people.

San Carlos Unified School District, which is east of Globe, canceled school on Tuesday due to concerns about flooding, mud damage and potential travel issues.
