Game and Fish officers believed the animal slipped into the water while trying to get a drink Thursday near the Carefree Highway. Department spokesman Reuben Gonzales said by the time staffers arrived, two cowboys with lassos were already trying to keep the deer from getting farther away.
One stood on a bridge and eventually dropped a lasso around the deer’s antlers.
“We’re very, very grateful for them,” Gonzales said of the nameless heroes.
The deer recovered after nearly a half hour and scampered off into the Lake Pleasant Regional Park in Peoria.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
