Woman wearing Google Glass while driving fights traffic citation

Cecilia Abadie, a software developer in California, was pulled over for doing 80 mph in a 65 mph zone back in October 2013, according to NBC News.

The California Highway Patrol officer saw she was wearing Google Glass and tacked on a citation usually given to people driving while a video or TV screen is on in the front of their vehicle.

Abadie has pleaded not guilty to both charges. Her attorney said her Google Glass was not operating at the time she was pulled over.

California Highway Patrol declined to comment, but “at the time of Abadie’s citation, the agency said anything which takes a driver’s attention from the road is dangerous.”

Three states — Delaware, New Jersey and West Virginia — have introduced legislature that would ban driving with Google Glass.

A San Diego judge will hear Abadie’s case on Thursday, and the verdict could potentially affect future laws on “wearable technology.”

The lightweight Google Glass device is voice-activated and utilizes a hidden camera and tiny display.
