Two Mexican soccer teams to square off at Phoenix’s Chase Field

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks may be out of season, but that won’t stop fans from pouring into Chase Field early next month.

Maricopa County officials announced Thursday that two Mexican soccer teams, Club Chivas de Guadalajara and Club Pachuca, would square off at the baseball venue on Jan. 3 at 3 p.m.

“Like many folks here, I grew up playing soccer,” County Supervisor Steve Gallardo said in a release. “So hosting two top teams from the Mexican League is a big deal for us.”

Tickets for the game go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at the Chase Field box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online. Prices start at $26 and top out at $126.

Both teams are expected to bring their full squads for the game, meaning some of the league’s top talent will be on display. Several members of the Mexican national team — Oswaldo Alanis, Raul Lopez and Oscar Perez — are likely to play.

The game is considered a friendly, meaning it has no consequence on the teams’ seasons. Both Guadalajara and Pachuca were in the middle of the Liga MX table as of Thursday. The teams are tied with 21 points. The leader, Pumas, has 35.

The soccer game will wrap up a busy two days for Chase Field. On Jan. 2, the hometown Arizona State Sun Devils football team will play the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Cactus Bowl.
