Spring break is still two months away, but thousands of Arizonans are likely already dreaming of a getaway to the beaches of Rocky Point.

Most people might imagine Puerto Peñasco as a place to sip piña coladas in the sun, and while many of these touristy Mexico locales are among the safest in the country, there still remains many risks in traveling there.

A travel warning by the U.S. Department of State cautions people about the risks of traveling to certain places in Mexico, including Rocky Point.

Puerto Peñasco is part of a larger region known as Sonora, which is a key region in Mexico in the international drug and human trafficking trades. Tourists should exercise extreme caution in these areas and only use main roads during the day.

The U.S. Department of State also advises travelers to avoid wearing objects that may display wealth, stating “U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain awareness of their surroundings and avoid situations in which they may be isolated or stand out as potential victims”.

Rocky Point will continue to be a hot spot for Arizonans to escape from reality, but people must remain aware during their travels and not escape from common sense.
