Sophia, Noah claim top spots in Arizona for baby names in 2015

PHOENIX — If Arizona parents were drawing names out of a hat to figure out what to call their newborns, that hat was filled with Sophia and Noah.

For the fifth straight year, Sophia took the title of most popular name for girls in the state, while Noah was tops for boys for the second consecutive time.

The Arizona Department of Health Services released its preliminary list of 2015’s most popular baby names on Wednesday.

There were 463 baby girls named Sophia and 429 boys named Noah, according to the statistics. Clearly, there was no run on names snatched from “Game of Thrones.”

After Sophia, the most-favored names for girls were Mia, Emma, Olivia, and Isabella.

For boys, Liam, Alexander, Michael and Ethan rounded out the top five.

The department gathers the necessary data from birth certificates submitted to the state vital records office.

Final numbers for the list will be released in February.

Meanwhile, at the website Nameberry, the overall top names in the U.S. for newborns were Charlotte and Ezra.

If you recall, the newest princess in Britain, daughter of future king William and his duchess wife, Kate, is named Charlotte. The little royal was born in May.

The site listed its own favorites names for the year, including Matteo, Dashiell and Finn for boys and Eleni and Marigold for girls.
