Police: Student in fatal Glendale school shooting got gun from classmate

PHOENIX — A girl who allegedly killed a fellow student before taking her own life at a Phoenix-area high school on Friday got the gun she used from a classmate, police said.

Police said the 15-year-old female suspect approached the classmate and told him she needed the handgun for protection, but would return it the following day. The classmate told police he gave her a family-owned gun without the permission of his parents.

The incident, which has been ruled a murder-suicide, happened about 8 a.m. Friday on the campus of Independence High School near 75th and Maryland avenues in Glendale.

Both the victim and suspect sustained a single gunshot wound and the gun was found nearby.

Glendale Police said a suicide note was found at the scene. It is believed that no students witnessed the shooting.

The classmate is cooperating with police and his involvement is being reviewed by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
