Only four months after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hit theaters, a new “Star Wars” trailer has been released, sparking elation and speculation among millions of Star Wars fans worldwide.
“Rogue One” will be the first of the franchise to stray from the original canon. Dubbed a “sci-fi heist,” “Rogue One” is actually a spin-off of the original George Lucas trilogy and takes place before Luke Skywalker ever leaves his arid homeland to save the galaxy.
Don’t fret at the “spin-off” designation — it looks like director Gareth Edwards has stayed wholly devoted to the beloved aesthetic of the original trilogy.
Like the latest Star Wars installment, “Rogue One” features another fearless feminine protagonist: Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones. Judging from the trailer, Erso has a colorful criminal history and what we assume is an asteroid-sized chip on her shoulder.
The trailer is 90 seconds packed with chill-inducing action and character introduction, yet manages to tell us little about the plotline. The Internet has speculated that Erso’s mission is to gather a team, infiltrate the newly-constructed Death Star and steal the plans (later to be given R2D2 for delivery to Princess Leia’s “only hope”).
Whatever the story is, the trailer for “Rogue One” has confirmed that our heads will be in a galaxy far-far-away each December for years to come.
