Heads up: Phoenix relocates eight red light cameras

PHOENIX — The city of Phoenix is relocating a majority of its red light cameras to new intersections.

“We have 12 cameras,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Jonathan Howard said.  “Eight are being moved to new locations, while four are staying at the same intersections.”

Howard said the department worked with the city’s streets department to pick the intersections. The new locations were determined by analyzing collision and accident data, along with reported red-light runners.

“The moral of the story is that we continue to have problems with red-light runners,” Howard said. “We continue to have problems with collisions at intersections.  We really hope everybody takes all intersections seriously.”

The intersections now being monitored are below:

• 35th Avenue and McDowell Road

• 35th Avenue and Cactus Road

• 35th and Glendale Avenues

• Seventh Street and Bell Road

• 24th Street and Thomas Road

• 50th Street and Ray Road

• Central Avenue and McDowell Road

• Tatum and Thunderbird roads.

The intersections still being monitored are:

• 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road

• 67th Avenue and McDowell Road

• 16th Street and Jefferson Street

Redflex is helping the city move the cameras. Many of them are already operational.

Howard said the cameras will remain in place for six to eight months.
