Heads up: Food drive closes street in downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX — A main street in downtown Phoenix was closed Thursday as a development and food bank joined forces to to feed 300,000 Arizonans.

Central Avenue was closed between Jefferson and Washington streets from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for donation collection. Jerry Brown with St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance said donations are being accepted at a drive-up zone on Central Avenue, but only if vehicles come from Jefferson Street.

“There’s a lot of people downtown who say they don’t have time to get to our food bank locations so we’re bringing the food bank to them,” he said.

“We’re coming off the summer months and our donations have gone out. Our reserves are down and we’re just two months away from the holidays. We’re looking for canned food items, non-perishables, stuff we can stock for the holiday season.”

CityScape employees have all donated cash or food. Fry’s Food is donating an entire pallet of canned vegetables with over 6,000 cans.
