ASU, Phoenix Children’s Hospital join forces for new alliance

Arizona State University is teaming up with Phoenix Children’s Hospital to help kids.

They are forming an alliance that will have ASU scientists working with the hospital’s doctors to focus on the prevention and treatment of pediatric diseases.

“It will be primarily in those areas where PCH is looking to solve specific problems in biomedicine and health,” said Sethuraman Panchanathan, the senior vice president for the Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development at ASU.

The Alliance benefits the ASU scientists by providing a hospital for them to work in.

“We have the ability now to attract research funding because of bringing the expertise together which can help solve problems in a rapid way,” Panchanathan said.

He said the people involved in the alliance are already busy.

“One of the projects that we are working on already is printing 3-D pictures of hearts of children who are in the pre-treatment phase so that you can have a good understanding of what the problem is before you actually embark on treating the patient,” said Panchanathan.

He said that the alliance will lead to better care for children and may also provide an economic benefit to the Valley. Panchanathan said that ASU has collaborations with other clinical partners that has led to the creation of other companies and brought jobs to the Valley.
