ASU mascot’s stunt puts councilman in hospital
The Arizona State University mascot jumped on an unsuspecting Tempe city councilman at a recent football home game and sent the man to the hospital with a back injury.
Next time, Sparky, just shake the guy’s hand.
Last week, the fun-loving Arizona State University mascot known for acrobatic stunts took a flying leap at an unsuspecting Tempe city councilman at a football home game. Not so fun result: David Schapira ended up in the hospital with a torn back muscle.

In Sparky’s defense, he couldn’t have known that Schapira, 35, a longtime elected official, was still recovering from back surgery performed two months ago.
What happened next wasn't pretty. Long story short, I'm in the ER now. #CantGetTheDevilOffMyBack #Ouch #GoDevils pic.twitter.com/948ApXQEjf

Schapira, who grew up in the Valley, was on the sideline Sept. 18 night during the Sun Devils’ game against New Mexico when went for the surprise greeting.
“I kind of laughed at first, then my expression changes to terror as I felt that pop,” Schapira told a local TV station.
According to the report, the university has offered to pay Schapira’s medical expenses.
Schapira has taught at ASU and been a state representative and a state senator, all jobs that require patience and the ability to get over yourself.
Which is probably how Schapira was able to forgive Sparky.
