PHOENIX — The first of three phrases to redesign Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal 3 has begun, officials said.
The first phase, which will be complete by mid-2016, includes an expanded security checkpoint, additional ticket counters and new baggage carousels.
“This program will fundamentally change the way travelers use Terminal 3,” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said in a press release. “Travelers will find a superior and modern terminal that showcases Arizona’s natural sunlight and beauty while also providing an efficient way to move through the terminal.”
City Councilwoman Kate Gallego said the project will be split into phases to allow customers to travel as smoothly as possible.
“Customer service is extremely important to us,” Gallego said in a press release. “These new enhancements will allow us to continue providing a world-class experience to every customer every day.”
Several airlines will relocate to fully serve customers while allowing construction to continue on Terminal 3’s south concourse. In April, Spirit and Sun Country Airlines will relocate to Terminal 2 and Hawaiian Airlines will move to the north concourse of Terminal 3.
The next couple phases include the addition of new shops, restaurants and additional features, Sky Harbor spokeswoman Heather Lissner said.
The Terminal 3 Modernization program is expected to be complete by 2020.
