Phoenix-area landmark restaurant Monti’s set to close in 2 weeks

PHOENIX — The oldest restaurant in Tempe will be closing its doors before the end of the month.

The Arizona Republic reported that after more than a half-century, Monti’s Steakhouse will shut down Nov. 17 to make way for a high-rise development on Mill Avenue near Rio Salado Parkway.

Michael Monti, second-generation owner of the iconic restaurant, told the paper that the cost of beef played a role in the decision.

His father, Leonard, opened La Casa Vieja in 1956, but had bought the building, home of Tempe founder Charles T. Hayden, in 1954. Constructed between 1871-73, Hayden House, as it became known, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The building, the oldest continuously occupied structure in the Valley, will remain standing.
