More credit-card skimmers found on Arizona gas pumps

PHOENIX — Arizona officials have found more credit-card skimmers on gas pumps in metro Phoenix, it was announced Friday.

The state’s Department of Weights and Measures said two more devices were discovered at a Circle K at 59th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale.

A week ago, investigators removed three of the same kind of personal information-stealing devices from pumps at Circle Ks in Phoenix at 32nd Street and Cactus Road and at Tatum Boulevard and Greenway Road.

“After we found the two last week, we targeted stations within a two-mile radius,” said Michelle Wilson, the department’s environmental program manager, in a statement.

“This week, two turned up in Glendale; now we’ll focus on stations in that area. We recommend stations check gas pumps on a regular basis.”

Gas pumps should have security stickers near the credit-card slot. If the sticker has been visibly tampered with, customers should tell a station attendant.

“We are out checking as much as we can, but a criminal could put in a skimmer the day after an inspection,” said Mark Killian, interim Weights and Measures director.
