PHOENIX — Republican president candidate Donald Trump took a lot of swings Wednesday at a rally near Phoenix, saying “we have such stupid people leading us.”
Trump said the current administration is losing on numerous fronts.
“We need strong people, we need sharp people,” he said. “We are being killed, we are being beaten by everybody. We don’t win on trade. We don’t win against ISIS. We don’t win with the military. Our vets are being mistreated.”
While the mogul seemed more than happy to rip into President Barack Obama’s handling of everything from trade deals with China — “We have tremendous power of China, but we don’t know that” — to the issue of education — “We want the local people to take care of their kids’ education” — he didn’t pull any punches, even when it came to his own party.
“I’m a Republican, but I’m so disappointed in the Republicans,” he said.
Just one day after squaring off against other presidential candidates in the fifth GOP debate, Trump minced no words about his opponents — “What is Rand Paul doing,” he questioned at one point — but he seemed particularly set on mocking former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
He slammed Bush’s spending on campaign ads and made fun of the way Bush speaks, calling his characteristically quiet voice “high-energy.”
However, Trump scoffed at the debate process, saying he may not participate in another one just so he can watch the ratings tank.
“You know what I get out of it? Nothing,” he said.
Immediately after taking shots at his own party, Trump turned his sights to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who Trump claims “doesn’t know what the hell she is doing.”
Trump also set his sights on the media, who he credits for giving him hours of free coverage and keeping his spending far short of his estimated $35 million for this point in the campaign.
“I’ve spent $211,000,” he said.
He also called most reporters dishonest, as he claims they fail to show his rally crowds.
“I consider myself to get the worst publicity, yet I have this massive lead,” he said. “It tells you two things: They (reporters) are dishonest and people are smart.”
