National Weather Service issues flash flood watch for Monday through Tuesday

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for parts of Arizona, including the metro Phoenix area on Sunday. The watch starts Monday morning and is supposed to run through Tuesday afternoon.

Hector Vasquez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, predicted heavy rains, winds and even a chance of hail over the course of the next two days.

“We will get general rainfall Monday, and possibly very heavy Monday night,” Vasquez said. “The bulk of the moisture will sheer off and move to the northeast on Tuesday.

“We have possibility for fast, strong moving thunderstorms with winds, heavy rain and maybe some hail for Tuesday with the storm coming off the California coast.”

The first of the two storms Vasquez noted is a tropical depression that will move into the southern part of the state on Monday.

“We noticed a tropical depression off the Baja Coast and it has got almost 50 mph winds around it that should move into southern Arizona on Monday morning,” Vasquez said. “It should produce excessive rainfall and that is what we call a warm rain. Then the general rain, colder rain from the middle atmosphere plus the thunderstorms. It all adds up for the possibility of excessive rainfall throughout the day.”

Vasquez also noted that this storm should move into the Phoenix metro area by late afternoon.

In addition, there is another storm developing 400 miles off the coast of San Diego that is being expected to move into the Valley on Tuesday.

The San Diego storm, along with the depression over the Baja Coast could make this a very rainy next couple of days in the Valley.
