Daily heat record broken in metro Phoenix for second day in a row

PHOENIX — The historically late fall heatwave in metro Phoenix continued into Saturday, as another daily heat record was broken.

The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official records, hit 99 degrees at 1:50 p.m., 14 degrees above normal. The previous record of 98 degrees was set in 2001.

By 3:10 p.m., the temperature reached 100 degrees, which made Oct. 26 the second-latest appearance of a triple-digit day (100 degrees on Oct. 27, 2006).

The city experienced a warmer-than-usual morning at 66 degrees, according to NWS.

Daily heat records a common thing for metro Phoenix this fall

After a three-week streak of new daily heat records ended last week, consecutive records have been broken to start the weekend.

In addition, Phoenix is well on its way to its hottest October on record in a year that already had the hottest June and September.

The average October temperature in Phoenix has been 86.8 degrees as of Friday, nearly nine degrees above the normal, with less than a week remaining.

The hottest October in Phoenix history occurred in 2023 with an average temperature of 82.7 degrees.
