How was Phoenix Officer Zane Coolidge killed?
Coolidge, 29, who was a five-year veteran of the force, died in a hospital on Sept. 6, three days after he and a fellow Phoenix officer were shot while responding to an auto theft call.
Officer Matthew Haney, who was protected by his ballistic vest, spent one night in the hospital.
The suspect, 41-year-old Saul Bal, was taken into custody by other officers at the scene near 16th Street and McDowell Road.
Bal was later indicted on five felony charges, including first-degree murder.
Governor orders flags to be flown at half-staff
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at government buildings from sunrise to sunset Wednesday to honor Coolidge, who leaves behind a wife and daughter.
“I am devastated by the senseless loss of Officer Coolidge,” Hobbs said in a press release. “My heart is with his family, the Phoenix Police Department and the entire law enforcement community during this incredibly difficult time. Officer Coolidge’s bravery, dedication and selflessness will never be forgotten. I am proud to honor his service to his community and the sacrifice he made to keep Phoenix safe.”
