PHOENIX — Four people were hospitalized on Sunday after a three-car crash in the East Valley, authorities said.
When police arrived near Power and Baseline roads in Mesa, they found three cars in the intersection, including one that had rolled over.
Two children in critical condition were hospitalized, as were two adults with minor injuries. One of the patients, a 3-month-old boy, later died.
Evidence suggested the driver of a Honda rear-ended a Subaru that was stopped at a red light, forcing the Subaru and its four passengers to roll over into the intersection.
The 3-month-old was properly fastened in a child safety seat at the time of the accident, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A child sitting next to the infant suffered a broken bone, and the front passengers suffered minor injuries in the rollover.
The Honda also collided with an Audi that was stopped at the light next to the Subaru. This passenger did not require extensive care.
While authorities found no signs of impairment in the Honda’s driver, speed was believed to be a factor.
