PHOENIX — The city of Mesa on Saturday celebrated the grand opening of a new facility featuring five multi-sport fields that will primarily be used for soccer.
Kids took the pitch to begin playing after a brief program and a ceremonial goal kick to officially unveil Lehi Sports Park near Center Street and the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway.
“The parks and community facilities in Mesa are second to none, and the new fields at Lehi Sports Park will be well-loved,” Mayor John Giles said in a press release.
Each of the fields have LED lighting, while two of the fields are also equipped with cameras for live streaming of games through an app. It’s the first sports field in the Valley to use the MuscoVision technology, which was donated to the project, according to the release.
The fields are available by reservation and the lights will only be on when games are taking place, the city said.
Mesa first acquired the property in 2002 and followed with the remaining parcels for Lehi Sports Park in 2019. Funding for the project came from a bond approved by voters in 2018 and a grant from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the city said.
“I appreciate the voters approving the bond that helped make this park a reality, for supporting the city of Mesa’s investment in the livability of our community,” Giles said.
More amenities are planned for the area as the city said it also bought a vacant 2.3-acre parcel northeast of Lehi Sports Park that will be used for future development.
