PHOENIX — Mesa is hosting a grand opening for a new sports park Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Lehi Sports Park located at Center Street and Lehi Road in north Mesa has five multi-sports fields that will be primarily used for soccer. The fields will be illuminated by LED lighting which will only be on when fields are in use and limit light pollution in the surrounding neighborhood.
“I care deeply about this city and its public spaces,” Mesa Councilmember Mark Freeman said in a press release. “This inviting, well-equipped space will be a place for Mesa residents to gather with their families and friends to play, watch and enjoy soccer games and other sporting events alike.”
The park will also have a MuscoVision Camera between Fields 1 and 2 for live streaming games, the first sports field in the Valley to use such a camera.
Fields will be available for reservations.
Mesa acquired a section of the property in 2002 and the remaining parcels for sports fields in 2019, according to the release. The East Valley city also purchased a vacant 2.3-acre lot northeast of the park for future development.
The park was funded by a 2018 General Obligation Bond approved by voters and a grant from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
“I appreciate the voters approving the bond that helped make this park a reality, for supporting the city of Mesa’s investment in the livability of our community,” Mayor John Giles said in the release.
