PHOENIX — A homeowner fatally shot a man who allegedly threatened their son with a gun at their east Mesa residence early Saturday, authorities said.
Officers responded to the shooting around 3:40 a.m. near University Drive and the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, the Mesa Police Department said in a press release.
They found Omar Valdez, 26, laying in the roadway with gunshot wounds and a semiautomatic handgun next to him, police said.
Valdez was taken to a hospital where he died.
The 47-year-old homeowner identified themselves as the shooter and told officers Valdez came to the home looking for his girlfriend’s cousin.
The homeowner said they shot Valdez after he pointed a gun at their son in the doorway, police said.
Three other adults were detained during the investigation and the homeowner’s gun was found just inside the front door of the home.
No charges have been filed, however, the investigation into the case remains ongoing.
