PHOENIX — Traffic statistics collected over the holidays show fewer Arizona drivers were arrested for DUIs compared to the previous year, officials announced Wednesday.

The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reported 1,736 drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI in December — about a 15% decrease over the same period in 2021.

Of those arrests, 378 were extreme DUIs where drivers had a blood alcohol content of at least 0.15%, according to the report.

The average known BAC level for those arrested was 0.156% — the legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08%.

DUI drug arrests were down for a fourth consecutive year, with 480 arrested in 2022. That number was down from 586 the previous year and from 612 in 2020.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 35,658 traffic stops, about a 24% decrease from 2021.

GOSH has not yet released data on how many deaths were related to DUIs in December.
