PHOENIX — A man died early Sunday after a woman impaired at almost three times the legal limit caused multiple vehicle accidents in Surprise, authorities said.
Chalsey Brown, 29, was arrested and booked into Fourth Avenue Jail on numerous charges, including manslaughter and DUI over .150, the Surprise Police Department said in a press release.
Officers responded to a report of a crash involving three vehicles around 1:56 a.m. near Bell Road and Bullard Avenue and found Brown refusing to get out of her wrecked car.
Authorities said Brown was driving west on Bell Road when she rear-ended a vehicle, causing the driver, identified as 57-year-old Daniel Duran, to lose control and swerve toward a median, hitting a palm tree.
Duran had severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Brown continued driving west on Bell Road and sideswiped another vehicle, causing minor damage. Brown then struck a tree in the median, disabling her vehicle.
A DUI investigation concluded Brown was showing signs of impairment and a breath test confirmed she was impaired at almost three times the legal limit (.08), police said.
Excessive speed and impairment were contributing factors in the fatal crash.
