PHOENIX — The Glendale Police Department announced Wednesday that a retired lieutenant has died after a six-year battle with cancer.
Jason Zimmerman served nearly 20 years with the department in a variety of positions, Glendale Police said in a press release.
He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and stayed on with the department until retiring in 2019.
“Jason served our department with pride and humility,” Glendale Police Chief Chris Briggs said in the release.
“He always showed a strong dedication, first and foremost as a husband and father, as a leader in our department and for our community and finally enormous bravery and dedication to his fighting cancer.”
Zimmerman started with the department in 2000 after a four-year stint in the Army.
He is survived by his wife and son.
A procession in Zimmerman’s honor was held earlier this month.
“Through it all, Jason always had a smile on his face and kept to his mission of spreading the message of being kind,” Briggs said.
Zimmerman is the second Glendale first responder whose cancer-related death was announced this week.
Veteran firefighter Mark Fowl died Monday after a yearlong battle with brain cancer.
“We ask you to pray for us and our brothers and sisters at our Glendale Fire Department during what is becoming a very difficult week,” Glendale Police said in the release.
