PHOENIX — The suspect in a shooting on the light rail in downtown Phoenix last weekend has also been accused of a murder that occurred the previous day, authorities said Thursday.
Fahim Matar, 25, was booked Wednesday on multiple counts, including first-degree murder, for an Oct. 21 homicide near a bus stop at 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road, the Phoenix Police Department said.
Officers said 48-year-old Foday Kamara was found with gunshot wounds; he later died at a hospital. The suspect fled the area.
Matar was arrested on Oct. 22 for allegedly shooting a man on the light rail that day near First Avenue and Van Buren Street. The victim in that incident suffered injuries that aren’t life-threatening, police said.
Matar was booked for weapons offenses and aggravated assault in the light rail shooting.
As detectives worked both cases, evidence was gathered tying Matar to the Oct. 21 murder, police said.
He was taken from Maricopa County Jail to the Phoenix Police Department to be booked in the homicide case Wednesday and then taken back to jail.
