PHOENIX — Police chased a suspect from one East Valley city to another Thursday before exchanging gunfire that left the man dead, authorities said.

The Mesa Police Department said the 41-year-old man, identified later as Breen Reiss, was shot by Tempe police officers near Alma School and Broadway roads.

Mesa police, who are leading the investigation, said in a press release they were called to help Tempe police track a man accused of domestic violence, who left the scene in a truck.

Mesa supplied an air unit and found the vehicle in Tempe, but soon crossed city borders and stopped.

The man got out of the truck and walked west. Tempe police made contact with him and when they tried to take him into custody, he fired a handgun at those officers, Mesa police said.

Tempe officers returned fire, hitting the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mesa police said a gun was found next to the man.

The investigation is ongoing.
