PHOENIX — Officers arrested a suspect after responding to reports of shots fired inside a Valley Metro light rail train in downtown Phoenix on Saturday, authorities said.

Police found an adult male on the light rail near First Avenue and Van Buren Street who had been struck by gunfire, and he was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

With information allegedly collected on a possible suspect, police detained an adult male close by.

Police arrested Fahim Matar, 25, without incident.

Matar was later booked into Maricopa County Jail.

No other injuries have been reported regarding the alleged shooting.

An investigation ensued with detectives responding to the scene.

The light rail schedule was affected by the police activity, with eastbound and westbound trains having experienced 15-20-minute delays.

Schedule updates are posted online.
