Avondale’s 4-day event celebrating founder scheduled for mid-October

PHOENIX — A four-day event celebrating the founder of Avondale is scheduled to bring its historic downtown area to life in mid-October.

The 2022 Billy Moore Days, presented by Avondale Toyota, will run Oct. 13 through Oct. 16 in Old Town Avondale.

The street-style celebration includes food, music, rides, competitive showdowns, contest and stage acts, event organizers said in a press release.

A carnival will kick off the event on Oct. 13, lighting up DeConcini Park during all hours of the event, through Oct. 16.

Carnival times vary each day, with wristbands costing $17 in advance and $20 on the day of. ATMs will be available onsite as only cash will be accepted.

Floats, horses and entertainers will march down Western Avenue during the Billy Moore Days Parade on Oct. 15 beginning at 9 a.m.

Local celebrities, community organizations, antique cars and dance groups will be featured in the parade.

A fire house frenzy is set to take place hours after the parade begins at 12:30 p.m., with local firefighters conducting a battle with fire hoses as they work to push a barrel back and forth along a cable.

For those interested in western shows and contests, Comedy Stunt Shows will be available to watch Oct. 15 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There’ll be horsemanship demonstrations and various family-friendly contests, such as the wild west hoopin’ contest and the yee-haw hollering contest.

Event organizers advised there would be the sounds of simulated gunfire in the area at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

On the evenings of Oct. 14-15, live entertainment, food trucks and a saloon will also be nearby.

Western Avenue will be closed from 3rd Street to Dysart Road beginning Oct. 14 at 7 a.m. and from Central to Dysart roads starting at 6 a.m. on Oct. 15.

Parking to the event is free, as well as admission.
