PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix said Thursday they arrested two suspects in the fatal shooting of a young woman at her home.

The Phoenix Police Department said Leon Valencia Verdugo, 18, and Jesus Barrera, 22, were booked into jail during an investigation of the Wednesday morning death of Frida Valdez, 18.

Police said Verdugo was booked into Maricopa County Jail on one count of first-degree murder, while Barrera was booked on one count of misconduct involving weapons.

Valdez was shot at her home near Central Avenue and Broadway Road around 5 a.m., police said.

Police said in their initial assessment of the crime scene that someone had gone inside Valdez’s home and shot her.

ABC15 reported officers went to the home to make a welfare check. They went inside and found Valdez, who later died of her injuries.

No other details were made available.

Police said the investigation was ongoing.
