PHOENIX — Glendale announced Tuesday that the arena previously occupied by the Arizona Coyotes will be getting a new name.
The 18,000-seat Gila River Arena will become Desert Diamond Arena this fall, the city said.
The naming agreement will be in place for at least a decade and is a byproduct of a new partnership between Glendale, Desert Diamond Casinos and Entertainment, and event management company ASM Global.
“The exciting news about the naming rights agreement is a big win for Glendale and the West Valley,” Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said in a press release. “Desert Diamond Casinos are leaders in entertainment, job creation and driving increased business for retail, hotels and restaurants.
“It is a perfect fit for their brand to be extended to our arena. We are proud of the strong partnership between the Tohono O’odham Nation and our community.”
The Coyotes, who had occupied the arena since 2003, played their last game there in April.
Glendale has committed to turning the arena into a hub for concerts and other events.
The Killers will play in the arena on Sunday and Alan Jackson will take the stage Sept. 30.
More concerts are scheduled the rest of the year and Rage Against the Machine and Carrie Underwood will play at the venue in 2023.
In August 2021, the city said it would not renew its agreement with the NHL team beyond the current season.
The Coyotes are looking to build a new arena in Tempe but haven’t finalized any plans for a future home.
