PHOENIX – The boyfriend of a woman who was shot and killed in a Phoenix apartment Monday night is accused of pulling the trigger, authorities said.
Jermaine Lamar Houston, 36, was booked into Maricopa County Jail on multiple counts, including first-degree murder, in the death of 36-year-old Racal Monique Ramos, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release Tuesday.
Officers heard gunshots from inside an apartment after arriving at a complex near 27th and Glendale avenues for a welfare check around 7 p.m. Monday.
They then found Ramos, who’d been shot. She died of her injuries after being taken to a hospital.
Witnesses told police the suspect ran off after the shooting.
“Officers on scene learned the suspect was believed to be Racal’s boyfriend,” Sgt. Melissa Soliz said in the release. “A concentrated search of the immediate area was conducted.”
Police found Houston hiding nearby in the backyard of a home and took him into custody.
Detectives are working to determine what led up to the shooting.
No other details were immediately available.
