Trooper hospitalized after head-on collision to stop wrong-way driver in Tempe

PHOENIX — An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was hospitalized Sunday morning after colliding with a wrong-way driver in Tempe, bringing it to a stop, authorities said.
The trooper received injuries that weren’t life-threatening after it hit a red Cadillac sedan, DPS said in a press release.
The sedan was heading southbound on northbound Loop 101 between Guadalupe and Baseline roads.
Initial reports around 4:35 a.m. were that a wrong-way vehicle was traveling eastbound on westbound Interstate 10 near Broadway Road in Tempe.
The driver of the sedan, a 22-year-old man, was suspected to be impaired, authorities said.
He was taken to the hospital for injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
The investigation remains ongoing.
