PHOENIX — The city of Mesa is asking for more cases of water to be donated as the annual campaign is only a third of the way to its goal of 600,000 bottles.
While 219,665 bottles of water have been collected since the Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign got underway on June 1, that’s a decline of more than 110,000 bottles from this time last year.
Less than two months remain to achieve the goal that aims to help homeless and unsheltered individuals during the sweltering heat of summer, the city said.
“United Food Bank is grateful for the donations of water and money we have received so far, but we have a long way to go to meet the need in our community,” Davie Richins, United Food Bank CEO, said in a press release.
“We know there are businesses and residents out there who can still help. Now is the time. We need you right now.”
People can drop off cases of water at more than 25 locations throughout the city. Cash donations can also be made online.
“I’m amazed by and grateful for the generosity of our community to support those in need during the hot summer months,” Mayor John Giles said in the release.
“As temperatures heat up, let’s help push this campaign over the finish line. Donating a case of water or making a modest contribution could be a lifesaver.”
More than 5.2 million bottles of water have been donated since the campaign began in 2007, the city said.
